There’s inspiration to be found just about anywhere, not just at the deli counter. Buffalo chicken, steak fajitas, Asian noodles, and fast food favorites. So many flavors to choose from.

What Makes a Good Pasta Salad?

The best pasta salad recipes start with perfectly cooked pasta. Aim for al dente, meaning with a slight bite, and rinse with cold water immediately after draining to stop it from cooking further.

Pasta will soften a bit more as it absorbs some of the dressing, resulting in the perfect texture when it’s time to eat.

Balance is also key… both in flavor and in what ends up on your fork! 

Use the pasta size and shape as your guide for chopping meats and veggies so you get a little bit of everything in every bite.

Make sure there’s a mixture of flavors and textures going on too. Pasta salad recipes shouldn’t lean too savory or too sweet. And if it tastes like something is missing, that something is probably acid (citrus juice or vinegar) or salt.

Tips for the Best Ever Pasta Salad Recipes

  • Assemble ahead of time. The flavor is even better when it’s had time to chill in the fridge.
  • Hold off on delicate ingredients. Greens wilt over time, and some produce (avocados and apples) will brown quickly. Add these just before serving.
  • Reserve some of the dressing. Add it just before serving for a quick refresh.
  • Scale up for crowds. Aim for ½-¾ cup per person as a side, or up to 1 ½ cups as a main dish.
  • Keep it cool. If transporting, use an insulated bag with ice packs. Doesn’t hurt to keep the bowl over ice for serving, either!
