Chocolate Banana Ice Cream

I have mentioned how challenging my 5 year old has become at meal time.  Munchkin has become picky about everything so, I have been pretty creative with her meals.  Over the last few years we have noticed that our normally well behaved child will change her behavior immediately after eating processed sugar and apparently even the natural sugar in a small bowl of fresh fruit could launch her to the moon.

Between Munchkins sensitivity to sugar and us trying to eat healthy…  Naturally sweetened treats are king!  This “ice cream” is currently Munchkin’s favorite treat!  She asks for it at every meal.  Truth is, its so healthy she could eat it for breakfast.  Not that it would happen, but she could eat it for breakfast.  LOL

How about you?  What is or was your biggest food challenge with your kids?

Prep Time 10 minutes
Freeze 4 hours
Total Time 4 hours 10 minutes
Course Dessert
Cuisine American
Method Blender, Freezer
Servings 4

Ingredients

  • 6 ripe bananas, 3 fresh and 3 frozen
  • 3 tablespoons cacao powder, or cocoa powder

Instructions

  • Place bananas in a blender. Blend until mixture starts to get creamy, scraping down sides as necessary. Add cacao powder and pulse until completely combined.
  • Transfer to a resealable container and place in freezer for 3-4 hours.
  • Scoop and serve or scoop and place scoops into a container for later use. If you decide to leave it in the freezer, just allow it to sit at room temperature for 10 minutes or so, to soften before serving.
  • Enjoy!

Donna’s Notes

If you do not have a high powdered blender you may want to cut your bananas into slices and freeze them.
There are no preservatives in your ice cream, so it will freeze solid. Simply remove from the freezer 10 minutes before serving to allow to soften slightly. If freezes and keeps beautifully!
You can transfer to a freezer-safe container and allow ice cream to firm up in the freezer for 2 to 3 hours.

  1. Great recipes – and I love a good "healthy" frozen treat. Be sure to stop by and enter to win our giveaway!

  2. This looks so creamy and delicious Donna. And so simple, seems like a no brainer for all of us who are constantly trying to loose those extra few pounds!

  3. I love banana ice cream – so simple that I gave away my ice cream maker.

What is the brand name of the cup that is pictured with the chocobanana ice cream? Where did you get it? It would match my retro kitchen perfectly.

    1. So simple I never blogged it. Then people I know started asking for the recipe. I though maybe it would be helpful to our readers. Thanks for coming by!

  4. I love finding ice cream recipes that don't require an ice cream maker (one appliance I don't have and probably wont for a while!)… especially ones that have like, no fat! 🙂 Discovered your blog this morning from GYB Hop… love catching up on your recipes, they look fab!

  5. I liked the chocolate banana version, but it was a little bland. Next time I will add a pinch of cinnamon and walnuts.

  6. What if u just want to make chocolate. Or if u just want to make strawberry. Or just one flavor…

  7. I don't think you can, since it's not "real" ice cream. Just my thoughts. This is supposed to be a "version" of ice cream.

    1. Yeah, if you take the banana out you have no base. I would recommend trying real ice cream for that.

  8. I made this today with my 5 yr old niece as we are having our movie night together and I used the Aldi brand of Nutella and she was so excited to make it herself she couldn't let it freeze all the way!! So after lots of begging and her asking if it was done every 5 mins I caved and took it out of the freezer after an hour and it was still amazing to eat. She LOVED it!! and so did 9 month old little brother. I have the Peanut butter one in the freezer now and can't wait to taste it!!

  9. do you think you could add in protein powder? maybe even chocolate protein powder to go with the flavor?

    1. That would be interesting, but there is no liquid. I would give it a try. Let me know how it goes.

  10. Love 99% of your recipes, but this one is not an "ice cream" in any manner. Not worthy of my effort.

    1. You are correct. It is a healthy alternative perfect for littles. If its not your cup of tea, then feel free to check out our other sweets. Have a fabulous summer.

  11. Two questions:

    1. Does this turn out sweet? Because cocoa powder is super bitter. I was thinking of adding a tsp. of vanilla to it as well, but I wanted to know what you guys thought!

    2. I tried doing the banana ice cream before with almond milk. I put it back in the freezer because it was soupy, but then it became an ice block… Any one know why? Will it freeze soft if it were just bananas?

    Thanks!

    1. I have done frozen bananas with almond milk. It was delicious. You may have added too much almond milk. You don't need much in there for the perfect creamy consistency.

  12. 5 stars
I was a bit skeptical but oh my gosh! This was incredible! 2 ingredients and I have a perfect cold treat anytime I want it!
