Shrimp Dip - Ingredient Notes

  • Cheese - Substitute Monterey Jack or swiss for the mozzarella. Or, use any combination of melty white cheese such as provolone, gouda, or gruyere.
  • Sour cream - I used a full-fat variety paired with light mayo, but feel free to use any combination of light/full-fat ingredients you would like. Plain Greek yogurt can also be used in place of this.
  • Mayonnaise - Avoid Miracle Whip, which has added sugar and seasonings that will affect the overall flavor of this dish.
  • Garlic powder - If you prefer fresh cloves, swap in 1 teaspoon of minced garlic instead.
  • Seasoning - Replace the garlic, onion, and dill with 1 tablespoon of powdered ranch, leek, or onion soup mix to create different flavor combinations.

Scoop up each tasty bite with crackers, pita chips, or even toasty baguette slices. You could even use this cream cheese shrimp dip as a filling for stuffed mushrooms. Yum!

Feeding a crowd? Double the recipe and bake it in a large casserole dish or divide it into ramekins for individual servings.

Kitchen Tools You Will Need
  • 3-Cup Baking Dish - Heats evenly and is easy to clean. Plus, the classic design is perfect for serving your hot shrimp dip right out of the oven.
  • Mixing Bowl - I like to have a variety of sizes on hand, and this set has them all.
  • Box Grater - As much as I love buying bagged shreds because it’s easier, freshly grated cheese melts down so much smoother and tastes better too.

FAQ - Common Recipe Questions

Can I make shrimp dip ahead of time?

Absolutely! Simply combine everything together and store it in the refrigerator, then bake just before you’re ready to eat.

If you’re going straight from the fridge to the oven, you may need to add an extra 5 minutes to the cooking time.

Why did my dip separate and become oily?

This usually happens for one of two reasons. If you cook it for too long, the oils in the mayonnaise and cheese start to separate. You’ll see the oil pooling on the top, and the texture will become grainy.

If the heat is up too high, the dairy will curdle. Be sure not to set the oven higher than 350°F and bake just until the cheese is melted and the dish is warmed through.

How long does cream cheese shrimp dip last in the refrigerator?

Once baked, it will keep for up to 5 days. Allow it to cool, then cover tightly or transfer to an airtight container before refrigerating.

Reheat in the oven at 325°F until warmed through to the center.
