Soft Chewy Brown Sugar Cookies

Soft and chewy Brown Sugar Cookies are seriously awesome! You can’t go wrong making this recipe for the perfect little sweet treat!
I found this Brown Sugar Cookies recipe pinned all over Pinterest. The name really made me think of home and of simpler days. Purely comforting. Something my great grandma may have made for us. May have. As in… I am 40 and a mom, I can’t remember that long ago. Somedays I am lucky to remember my name. So, I “imagine” that it was something she would make.
Then, I saw the brown butter frosting to go with it. I know, I know there was a huge brown butter trend last year. Ok, I missed that boat. Truth is, it was intentional. After watching my friends families spend $800 on the BetaMax’s when they were released, only to have the less expensive ($400 less expensive) VHS take the world by storm. Well it taught me to wait. OK, maybe not. I think that is actually Chad’s story. I am not that patient. But, then again I am also not a trend follower. My mom and dad taught me to be a leader and as a leader I kinda march to the beat of a different drummer.
Perhaps some days he is drumming on a tin can, but none the less… I am an individual. So, brown butter frosting? Nah. But, I tell you it is pretty delicious. I love the flavor. The cookies were a huge hit. Sugar, butter, vanilla… oh and sour cream. Seriously. Awesome. Can’t go too wrong with that line up.
Check out this amazing cookie line up. I had about 5 dozen of these assorted cookies in my freezer about a month ago. It was an attempt to keep them from getting eaten. Well. The bags are gone now. I blame the cookie monster. If you see him, let me know. {{{wiping inconspicuous cookie crumbs from my mouth}}} Did I mention these ALL freeze perfectly and taste unbelievable.

Chewy Brown Sugar Cookies
Equipment
Ingredients
- 2/3 cup butter, softened
- 1 1/2 cups light brown sugar, packed
- 2 large eggs
- 1 tablespoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 cup sour cream
Brown Butter Frosting
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F. Prepare 2 baking sheets by lightly greasing them. **Skip the parchment this time, the cookies need the metal contact to brown and will otherwise stick to the parchment.
- Combine flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a medium bowl. Whisk to combine and set aside.
- In the bowl of a electric mixer, blend together butter and brown sugar. Add eggs, one at a time; blend well. Add vanilla; beat until light.
- Add 1/2 of flour, mix well. Mix in sour cream. Add remaining flour. Mix to combine.
- Using a 1 tablespoon scooper (or a rounded teaspoon utensil) drop cookie dough onto prepared baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes until golden brown. Remove and allow to cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes and transfer to cooling rack and allow cookies to cool completely (or eat immediately). Frost with Brown Butter Frosting.
Brown Butter Frosting
- Melt butter in a saucepan over medium heat until it turns golden. Keep an eye on your pan, it goes from a caramel color to burnt pretty quick. Remove from heat. Add powdered sugar and milk and use electric mixer to beat on high power until frosting is combined.
- Drizzle frosting over cookies.Serve and enjoy!

These look so addictive! I'm still yet to try brown butter, but think I'm definitely going to have to give it a go now.
The cookies had good flavor but the texture was too airy for my taste. My hisband and children loved them.
Delicious with or without the frosting. I love these at night with a nice cold glass of milk!
