Potatoes are one of my family’s favorite side dishes. There are almost infinite ways to make them, so they make the perfect side for light or hearty meals.

Air fried recipes have become incredibly popular over the past few years, and with good reason!
Air frying is a healthier way to prepare foods that are typically deep fried, but without using huge amounts of oil.
If you’re tired of waiting an hour for baked potatoes to cook in the oven, an air fryer baked potato is the perfect solution!
They cook to perfection in about 30 minutes, much less time than oven baked potatoes.

Tips for the Perfect Baked Potato In The Air Fryer
- No Holes Required.
You don’t need to pierce holes in the potato skin; they turn out perfectly without doing this.
- Size Matters.
Be sure to use potatoes that are all about the same size. This ensures that they cook evenly and are finished baking at the same time.
- Wash and dry them first.
Using a potato brush makes it easier to clean your potatoes before you cook them. Also, be sure they are completely dry before you air fry potatoes.
- For crispy air fryer baked potatoes, always give your potatoes a light spritz with cooking oil before air frying them.
You can use olive oil or bacon drippings, but don’t rub potatoes with butter, because it has a lot of moisture that can prevent the skins from crisping up.
- Check the potatoes halfway through cooking.
If the skins are starting to look too brown, you can flip them over using a pair of cooking tongs.
- Don’t cook more than 4 potatoes at a time.
You don’t want them to be crowded, because they won’t cook as evenly.
You only need a few simple tools to make air fried potatoes.

- Oil spray bottle – If you don’t have an oil spray bottle, you can put the olive oil on your hands and rub the outside of the potato that way.
Just make sure that they are evenly coated.

There are so many different toppings you can use on your air fried potatoes.
While we all have our own personal favorites, here are a few more potato topping ideas you might want to try.
- Chives or chopped green onions
- Nacho cheese sauce or smoked provolone cheese sauce
- Sour cream
- Everything bagel seasoning
- Crumbled bacon
- Shredded or crumbled cheese – bleu cheese is fantastic on baked potatoes!
- Homemade salsa
- Sautéed mushrooms
Of course, your baked potato in the air fryer will come out so perfectly, so all you really need to add is a pat of butter and your favorite sea salt.
Air Fryer Baked Potatoes FAQ
Experts recommend not wrapping potatoes in foil, because it may present a risk of botulism. Instead, rub the potato with olive oil to create a crispy exterior.
You can use aluminum foil in the basket of your air fryer. But, you should never use it on the base of the air fryer.
It may end up scratching the surface and will interfere with cooking.
Air-fried foods are healthier than deep-fried foods because they are lower in fat and calories. But, because they do have some type of added oil, they may not be as healthy as their broiled or steamed alternatives.
So, an air fryer baked potatoes are better than fried potatoes. But, it may not be as healthy as boiled potatoes.
The benefit of making baked potatoes in the air fryer isn’t necessarily that they are healthier. It’s more about how much faster it is to make them this way.
The best potatoes for baking are russets. You can use other types if you want air fryer baked potatoes, but these give the best results.
Storing and reheating leftovers
Place the baked potato in an airtight container or a resealable bag. It will stay good for 3 to 5 days this way.
To reheat it, place it in the oven at 350F for about 15 to 20 minutes or until heated through.

Air Fryer Baked Potatoes + Video
- 4 medium Russet potatoes
- 1 1/2 tablespoons olive oil, or bacon drippings
- 2 teaspoons kosher salt
- Preheat your air fryer to 400°F for 3 minutes while you prep the potatoes.
- Scrub potatoes until they are free of dirt. Rinse and pat completely dry with paper towels or a clean kitchen cloth.
- Use the tines of a fork to poke holes in several places on each potato.
- Place the unpeeled potatoes in a large bowl and drizzle oil over the top. Rub the potatoes with the oil until completely coated. Sprinkle each with kosher salt.
- Place the potatoes in the preheated air fryer with room around them for the air to circulate. Bake for 30-40 minutes (depending on the size of the potatoes) until they are cooked through and soft in the center.
- At 30 minutes, open the air fryer and check the tenderness of the potato. Squeeze the potato with tongs or an oven mitt – if it feels crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, it is done. Alternatively, insert the probe of an instant read thermometer into a potato. When the internal temp of the potatoes reaches 210°F they are done.
- Remove potatoes with tongs and place on serving dish.
- Using an oven mitt to hold the potato, give it a little squeeze to help separate the potato from the skin. Then use a sharp knife to slice the potato 3 to 4 inches the long way down the center. Turn the potato and repeat horizontally. Holding potato in a clean kitchen towel, use your hands to gently push the ends toward each other.
- Serve air fryer baked potatoes with your favorite potato fixings on top, and enjoy!
