Banana Ice Cream Recipe

Because this homemade soft serve ice cream is made from frozen fruit, it’s also known as “nice cream.”

Before it became crazy popular and loads of other flavors were created, the original nice cream was made with nothing but a frozen banana — talk about easy!!

I’m telling you, this frozen fruit ice cream is so flipping creamy and delicious, you won’t even realize that it’s a healthy treat.

In addition to being healthy, it also just happens to be dairy free, and the best part is: you control the sweetness.

If you’re looking for a few new fruit ice cream recipes to make, try my 3-ingredient chocolate peanut butter ice cream, chocolate banana ice cream, and frozen banana ice cream with pecans.

Each one is a cinch to make and completely dairy free!

Why We Love Frozen Fruit Ice Cream

Unlike traditional ice cream, which contains a lot of sugar and heavy cream, this healthy banana strawberry ice cream is a naturally sweetened frozen treat.

The sugar in this recipe is completely optional! You can leave it out entirely if you prefer. Or, you can use a liquid sweetener like Stevia or honey instead.

It’s a much better choice for anyone that is watching their calories or is lactose intolerant. Just keep in mind that bananas are high in sugar on their own.

How to Make Banana Strawberry Ice Cream

Simply slice up the frozen fruit and add it to a high-power blender or a food processor.

Be sure the lid is on tight, then blend until the frozen strawberries and bananas become creamy and smooth. That’s all there is to it! Easy, right?

Tips for Perfect Homemade Soft Serve Ice Cream

  • Changing the consistency. If you want soft and creamy fruit ice cream, you can eat it right out of the blender.

However, if you want ice cream that is a bit more solid, place the mixture in the freezer for a couple of hours.

Keep in mind — since there are no preservatives, homemade soft serve ice cream will freeze up rock hard.

To soften, just remove it from the freezer 10 minutes before you want to serve it.
  • Always use ripe bananas when you make this treat. If they are still a bit green, the strawberry banana ice cream won’t be sweet enough.
  • Using a regular blender. If you don’t own a high-powered blender or a food processor, you can use a traditional blender.

But, the consistency will be better if you cut your bananas into slices before you freeze them.

Flavor Variations

Frozen bananas are key to the creamy texture of this frozen dessert. There isn’t a good substitute for them that I know of.

That said, there are many different flavor variations you can make!! Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

  • Blueberry and banana
  • Cocoa powder and banana
  • Peach and banana
  • Coconut milk with pineapple and banana
  • Nutella and banana

You can see how this banana ice cream recipe has a world of possibilities!

Kitchen Tools and Supplies You’ll Need

  • Mixing Bowl – I like a variety of mixing bowls and prep bowls, and this set has them all.

Banana Ice Cream Recipe FAQ

How long does homemade ice cream last in the freezer?

This banana strawberry ice cream can be frozen for up to 2 months in an airtight container. That’s because it’s simply blended frozen fruit!

Just be sure to soften it on the counter before serving.

Dairy-based recipes only last for 1 to 2 weeks, making this easy fruit ice cream a great make-ahead option.

Can you make bananas ripen more slowly?

If you have bananas that are ripening too fast, just peel them and put them in the freezer to use in the future.

As a bonus, when you start craving strawberry banana ice cream, your bananas will already be frozen and ready to use!

Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Course Dessert
Cuisine American
Method Blender, Microwave
Servings 8 people

  • 4 large bananas, frozen
  • 4 cups strawberries, frozen
  • 2 tablespoons sugar, optional

  • Place strawberries in a bowl or measuring cup. If your strawberries are not very sweet, sprinkle with sugar and toss to combine. Place the bowl in the microwave at 30-second intervals until the strawberries soften slightly and the sugar dissolves in the juice (if used).
  • Add bananas and strawberry mixture to the blender and blend until they reach the perfect consistency.
  • When your ice cream stops moving in the blender, you will want to stop and scrape down the pitcher of the blender and stir a few times, about 2-3 minutes of total blending time.
  • Your frozen fruit may separate into tiny frozen chunks before it becomes a fabulous creamy consistency, so be patient.
  • Serve and enjoy! You can also transfer to a freezer-safe container and allow ice cream to firm up in the freezer for 2 to 3 hours.

Donna’s Notes

  1. If you do not have a high powdered blender you may want to cut your bananas into slices and freeze them.
  2. There are no preservatives in your ice cream, so it will freeze solid. Simply remove from the freezer 10 minutes before serving to allow to soften slightly. It freezes and keeps beautifully!

  1. Tastes great! But I had to substitute raspberries for strawberries because thats what I had. I also added just a splash of cream. Delicious!

  2. This is not ice cream. it is frozen fruit sorbet. Ice cream has to have cream in it. If you are going to pull out the ice cream maker, and are going to spend money for quality ingredients, then take the extra 5 minutes and make a custard based ice cream. I one cup half and half, and 3 cups milk, 1 cup of sugar, and 5 egg yolks. Then I add my flavorings to the cooled custard mixture. You have to have some cream in it to call it ice cream. You can use milk, but you have to use whole milk, because the mixture has to have some butterfat to freeze properly. Then, I heated the fresh strawberries on the stove with 1/2 cup sugar, and 1 TBLS of lemon juice. Reduce it then cool it. You can find the custard recipe on the internet. My ice cream took longer, but is delicious. Have a great day!

  3. Wow. For all the anal readers/correctors out there, type in " " around ice cream: "ice cream", or write faux ice cream, frozen dessert…geez. Sounds yummers, and with Spring and ripening strawberries… Thanks.

  4. Thanks for the recipe. Good and healthy! Just a warning to readers to make sure they chop off the green leaves of the strawberries before freezing them. I wasn't thinking that through when I stuck them in the freezer after washing and drying them off. Very hard to cut the leaves off when frozen! "Duhh!"

  5. Your recipes are always pictured so beautifully. I want to make them all! Keep those super recipes coming

  6. I made this as the recipe recommends. It was delicious! I think next time I may try adding a little bit of chocolate chips in it. I would then taste something like a chocolate covered strawberry. Yum!

  7. I made this and put resulting "ice cream" into some pudding pop molds I have and then put those in the freezer. An hour later the kids had banana-strawberry "ice cream" popsicles. (I had one too ๐Ÿ˜‰ )

  8. This is delicious, and I call it ice cream for my addiction, what matters if there is cream in it? I used 1 sliced frozen banana, about 2/3 C frozen strawberries, and 1 t. cocoa, 1 T stevia. Great!!

  9. I just made a variation with banana, strawberry and mango. I used 1/2 cup unsweetened coconut milk to help blend with a dash of vanilla for flavor enhancement. YUM! It's like a creamy sorbet. Luscious and decadent.

  10. Once you add the flavour, e.g. strawberry, can you taste the banana? I am worried the taste and smell of ripe bananas may be a bit overpowering. Thanks.

  11. I enjoyed reading your work. I'll come back for more

Keep up the good work ๐Ÿ™‚ from, Home Buys Plus

  12. Why does the banana and strawberies have to be frozen? Can't you just freeze the ice cream after you make it.

  13. Iโ€™d like to try a vanilla bean vanilla version/ can I use frozen coconut milk instead of the fruit with the the scraping of a vanilla bean & the bananas? Think that would work?

  14. 5 stars
Strawberry Banana smoothies are my go to during the week, but this creamy ice-cream is perfect as a midnight snack.
