How To Make Air Fryer Sweet Potato Chips

Run the vegetables over a mandolin slicer, soak in cold water, then pat dry and toss with oil and seasoning.

When air frying sweet potato chips, it’s important that the slices are dried thoroughly after soaking or they will become soggy.

Cook in batches in a single layer, then cool on a wire rack. Give the basket a good shake about halfway through or use tongs to flip all of the pieces over to ensure they are evenly crisped.

Helpful Tips and Tricks
  • Don’t skip the soak! This step removes the excess starch and prevents the chips from sticking to each other.
  • Spray the basket. While it’s typically not an issue, you can spritz on a thin layer of oil to prevent any pieces from sticking to the bottom. I recommend a spray bottle with cooking oil since the propellant in non-stick sprays can cause the basket to deteriorate over time.
  • Want to add extra flavor? Feel free to use whatever spices sound good and sprinkle them in with the salt and pepper. Chile powder or cinnamon are popular choices.
  • Adjust time as needed. Thinner slices tend to burn easier, so you will need to keep a close eye on them. On the other hand, thicker rounds will probably need to cook longer and may not be as crisp.

Kitchen Tools You Will Need
  • Air Fryer - Different brands and sizes will require different cooking times, so be familiar with your model and make adjustments as needed.
  • A mandolin slicer makes quick work of slicing, but a sharp knife can be used instead if you don’t have one.
  • Cooling Racks - I like these because you can cool a lot at once without taking up a lot of counter space.

FAQ - Common Recipe Questions

Do I need to peel the vegetables first?

This is really a matter of preference, but it’s definitely not a required step. Gently scrub the outsides to remove any dirt, but it’s perfectly safe to eat the skin.

How thick should the slices be?

Aim for about ⅛-inch in thickness with the mandolin, but it’s ok to go a little thicker when using a knife. It’s more important that every round be as close to the same size as possible so they cook evenly.

What dips go with air fryer sweet potato chips?

Pair these with something cool and creamy, like Greek yogurt mixed with lime and chile powder or even guacamole.

A tangy aioli would be particularly delicious. Simply mix together equal parts sour cream and mayonnaise with a little bit of lemon juice and garlic. A dash of cayenne or Sriracha will give it a little kick if you like things spicy.
