Honey Mustard Recipe

Nothing compares to the original Wendy’s honey mustard dipping sauce, but this recipe comes pretty darn close! Plus, you only need five ingredients that are probably already in your fridge and pantry.

It’s a fantastic dipping sauce for chicken nuggets, fries, or even pigs in a blanket. I also like to use it when I make our version of Outback’s Alice Springs Chicken.

Recipe Tips

  • Let it sit overnight. While it’s perfectly fine to use it right away, the flavor is noticeably better the longer the ingredients have to meld together.
  • Want a larger batch? Easily double or triple the amounts for parties or if you want to keep a jar on hand.
  • Make it spicy. For a little extra heat, add a pinch of cayenne powder or a dash of your favorite hot sauce.

Drizzle some over salads or a tray of roasted vegetables and even use it as a glaze for a variety of grilled or roasted meats.

Honey Mustard Recipe FAQ

How long does homemade mustard dipping sauce last?

When stored in an airtight container, it should keep for 3 to 4 days in the refrigerator. Give it a good stir before using in case any of the ingredients start to separate.

What brands did you use for this honey mustard recipe?

Feel free to use whatever you have on hand, but I’ve found that these brands produce a flavor that’s closest to the Wendy’s version.

  • Mayonnaise – Hellmans or Best Food are my preferred brands. Miracle Whip has added sugar and spices, making it both sweeter and spicier and not a great choice for this recipe.
  • Honey – Most varieties you find at the store are filtered to remove pollen and prevent them from crystallizing too quickly. As a result, these tend to be much sweeter and may have a sickly sweet aftertaste. Look for bottles labeled as raw honey or buy some from your local beekeeper.
  • Yellow mustard – I use Gulden’s, which I believe is available at most stores in the US. Out of all of the ingredients, this one has the most wiggle room as far as brand goes.
  • Dijon – Grey Poupon is my top choice, and what sets it apart is the small amount of white wine. Not only does this add acidity, but the brightness helps to balance the natural earthy flavor.
  • Lemon juice – Freshly squeezed is going to have a better flavor than bottled. You should only need about half a lemon for this recipe.

  1. My daughter adores honey mustard sauces – I will print this for her! Thanks – have a great week.

  2. This is the same recipe I've used to make honey mustard in the past and the boys loved it! I'll have to try your version with a little bit more honey next time and see how we like it. Thanks, chickie!

  3. Just now I tried it and wow!! everybody liked it so much… I was looking for Honey mustered sauce in Hyderabad , India, but was not able to find one… This one rocks!! my search ends and doing it at home now …. Thanks for the great recipy

  4. Tried it tonight. Absolutely delicious! Next time I will refrigerae overnight I'm sure it will be doubly good. To Chris…,the lemon juice takes the place of the vinegar. Try it first before playing with it. I am sure you will be pleased with it as is.

  5. I haven't tried this recipe yet…but like Chris was wondering about the absence of vinegar (only because I am a huge fan of vinegars in dressing!) Just as an additional bit of reference should anyone want to adjust the recipe, here are the actual ingredients to "Wendy's Deli Honey Mustard Dipping Sauce" and the link where the information was obtained:

  6. Sorry…there are 2 types of Honey Mustard at Wendy's and if you are like me, I like the version that is sold with the nuggets….the ingredients for that are here rather than the version I just posted – hope it helps if you need to tweak this recipe at all!:

  7. This really needs brand names because the taste from different mayo and mustards are so extreme. You had me at Wendys because it is a VERY specific taste, and I've tried about a dozen brands from the store with no luck. Just saying "half cup mayo" is kind of unhelpful. We really need to know the exact brands to get the exact taste that you found better than Wendy's.

    1. Good point. Hellmans/Best Foods Mayo and Guldens Yellow Mustard. Dijon is Grey Poupon. Enjoy and let us know how it goes.

    1. It is on the page above the comments here. Start at the top and scroll down below the last large image. It's is here. Enjoy and let us know how it goes.

  8. Tried this. Very, very good! I used vegan mayonnaise, and it still tasted just like the honey mustard dips I love at my favorite pizza joint.

  9. I came across your recipe last night and whipped up a batch following the exact directions and refrigerated it overnight. I also had a Wendy's Honey Mustard condiment from a few days ago that I kept on hand and used it to do a comparison. Holy cow! This is the real deal!!! You nailed this recipe. It tastes exactly like Wendy's. It's so good, I'm thinking about trying it as a glaze on a ham for soon now that I have an ample supply.

  10. I've always made my own honey mustard with just 3 ingredients: Mayo, honey and yellow mustard. Next time I decide to make it I'm going to try it with the Dijon and lemon.

I’m a bit of a honey mustard snob. I feel like it can either be excellent, or very disappointing. This recipe does not disappoint. I made some yesterday with what I had on hand, and let it sit overnight, as recommended. So tasty!! I even used a store brand stone-ground Dijon, and standard, blah, filtered honey, because as I said, I had them on hand.
I can’t wait to make this again with the *correct* ingredients!!! This is a winning recipe, without question. Thank you so much for sharing
