In my opinion, all the best desserts start with chocolate and caramel! The addition of crunchy bits of toffee and chopped nuts put this one right over the top.
This recipe is incredibly easy to make, but give yourself plenty of time since it has to chill for a couple of hours in the middle.
I have another delicious chocolate cake mix recipe that combines the classic poke style with peanut butter whipped cream and plenty of decadent toppings.
Or, use a yellow or white box mix for my Cherry Dump Cake. It’s layered right inside your baking dish so there are no extra dishes to wash afterward!

How To Make Better Than Sex Cake

First, prepare the batter according to the instructions on the box since the amounts for water, eggs, and oil may differ by brand.
Pour the batter into a greased pan and bake until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Next, thin out the condensed milk and caramel in the microwave and pour them evenly over the pan.
Let the dessert cool to room temperature, then wrap tightly with plastic wrap and chill in the refrigerator for 2 hours.
Once it’s fully chilled, spread the whipped topping in an even layer over the top.
Drizzle with sauces and top with chopped candy pieces and nuts before serving.

Helpful Tips and Tricks

  • Use room temperature ingredients. Be sure that the water isn’t too cold and remove the eggs from the refrigerator about 30 minutes ahead of time. This will ensure even mixing and keep the sponge tender and moist.
  • Tip for poking holes: If your spoon doesn’t have a round handle, use the large end of a chopstick or even a plastic straw. The holes should be wide enough for the liquids to soak into.
  • Need to make it in advance? You can keep it covered in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. If you’ll be serving guests, I recommend making it no more than a day ahead of time.
  • Create clean, even slices. Run a sharp knife under hot water, then dry with a clean towel. The metal will retain the heat and glide smoothly through the dessert.

Can I use different types of candy?
Absolutely! Swap in another one of your favorites or combine a few different options.
If you aren’t a fan of toffee, try chopped up Butterfinger, Snickers, or even Reese’s peanut butter cups.
Crushed cookies would also taste great, or keep things simple with some M&M’s or mini chocolate chips.

What You Will Need For This Chocolate Cake Mix Recipe
  • 9x13 Baking Dish - This set is one of my favorites! The 9x13 is perfect for casseroles and the smaller size is awesome for making half a casserole recipe.
  • Mixing Bowls - I like to have a variety of sizes on hand, and these are microwave-safe too!
  • A Sturdy Wooden Spoon - Preferably one with a rounded handle. It creates properly sized holes for grabbing that gooey filling!
  • Offset Spatula - This spatula has so many uses and is perfect for smoothing out the whipped topping.

  4. Heat the bowls in the microwave for 30 seconds, then pour them over the cake evenly.
  5. Once cooled, cover the cake with cling wrap and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  6. Remove the cake from the fridge and ice the cake with the whipped topping.
  7. Drizzle the chocolate sauce then the caramel sauce over the cake. Sprinkle with the Heath pieces and nuts if using.
  8. Cut into 12 slices and serve.
  1. Storage options: This cake can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.

  1. This is just like a "Butterfinger Cake" I've been making for years! Everyone that tries it loves it! I've never thought about using Heath Bars instead, but I definitely will try it now!
