This copycat Chick fil A Sauce is creamy, smoky, sweet, and just a little tangy… basically everything you want in one dip. It’s rich from the mayo, balanced with honey, and gets that signature flavor from barbecue sauce and mustard. Smooth, bold, and ridiculously good… the kind of sauce that makes people keep dipping long after the food’s gone.

Chick fil A Sauce

You dip something in this… and suddenly you’re dipping everything in it.

Honestly, it’s my absolute fav! When we go to Chick-fil-A, I’m the one asking for a handful… and somehow walking out with about ten of them like that’s completely reasonable.

It’s perfect on the original chicken sammy, both original and grilled nugs, and those mindblowing waffle fries… even the last little crispy bits in the bottom of the bag. It just works.

And the best part? You can make this Chick fil A sauce recipe at home in five minutes and not ration every single dip.

INGREDIENT NOTES

  • Mayonnaise: This is your base, so use one you like. It makes the sauce creamy and rich.
  • Barbecue Sauce: Go for a smoky or honey-style version for that classic flavor. This really defines the sauce.
  • Honey: Adds sweetness and smooths out the tang from the mustard and lemon.
  • Fresh Lemon Juice: Brightens everything up. Bottled works, but fresh tastes cleaner.
  • Yellow Mustard: Gives that signature tang and a little color. Don’t swap it for Dijon.. it changes the flavor.

VARIATIONS

Spicy Version: Add a pinch of cayenne or a dash of hot sauce.

Extra Tangy: Mix in a little more mustard or lemon juice.

Smokier Flavor: Use a mesquite or hickory barbecue sauce.

Lower Sugar: Reduce the honey slightly if you prefer less sweetness.

Honey BBQ Boost: Use honey barbecue sauce and keep the honey for a richer flavor.

Lighter Option: Use light mayo… but understand it will be slightly thinner.

HOW TO MAKE CHICK FIL A SAUCE AT HOME

This version is much simpler than the original, with only five ingredients that you probably already have in your kitchen.

It makes enough for one or two people, but it’s easy to scale up the recipe as needed. I’ll usually whip up a large batch of homemade Chick fil A sauce all at once and keep it in the refrigerator to enjoy throughout the week!

CHICK-FIL-A SAUCE FAQ

Does it really taste like Chick fil A sauce?

Yes… very close. The barbecue sauce you use makes the biggest difference.

Can I make it ahead of time?

Absolutely. Homemade Chick fil A sauce actually tastes better after it sits for a bit.

How long does it last?

Up to 1 week in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Do I have to chill it?

You don’t have to, but the flavor improves after about 30 minutes.

Sauces like this are all about balance. Too much honey and it goes overly sweet. Too much mustard and it gets sharp fast.

I’ve found that letting it sit for even just 30 minutes makes a noticeable difference… everything settles in and smooths out.

And barbecue sauce matters more than people think. A smoky one gives you that deeper flavor that makes this taste like the real thing instead of just “close enough.”

Once you learn how to make Chick fil A sauce from scratch, you’ll never need to grab extras from the restaurant again!

DONNA’S PRO TIPS

  • Taste after mixing and adjust slightly if needed… especially sweetness.
  • Chill Chick fil A sauce before serving if you have time. It’s worth it.
  • Use a smooth barbecue sauce (not chunky) for best texture.
  • Don’t skip the lemon juice. It keeps the sauce from feeling too heavy.
  • Store this sauce in a squeeze bottle for easy serving.
  • Make a double batch… it goes fast!
  • Stir homemade Chick fil A sauce before serving if it’s been sitting in the fridge.

TOOLS NEEDED

  • Small Mixing Bowl: Just enough space to whisk everything together.
  • Whisk or Spoon: Either works! This one comes together quickly.
  • Measuring Spoons: Helps keep the balance just right.
  • Airtight Container: For storing and chilling.

  1. This was pretty close – very yummy. I didn't have any lemon juice but will use it the next time. Thanks for the recipe. So simple to make.

  2. Only "con" to making my own sauce is that the commercial, bottled Chick-fil-A version supports a scholarship fund for underprivileged, deserving students.

  3. 5 stars
The chick fil a sauce is so good, and I love making a homemade version when I’m in the mood to! Otherwise I just buy the sauce, but your recipe is almost spot on!
