How To Make A Smores Cake

  1. Bake: Prepare your favorite chocolate box mix according to the directions and bake. Allow it to cool for about 20 to 30 minutes before continuing.
  2. Poke: Create evenly spaced holes that are large enough to absorb the filling, but not so large that they affect the overall structure. The rounded end of a wooden spoon, a large straw, or the wide end of a chopstick will create a good size.
  3. Fill: Pour the warmed topping evenly over the cake, letting it soak into every hole.
  4. Top: Sprinkle the remaining ingredients along the top and place under the broiler until toasty and melted.

Serve smores cake fresh out of the oven for best results.

Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for 3 to 4 days. Be sure to cover tightly with plastic wrap or a lid so it doesn’t dry out.

Ingredient Notes and Substitutions

  • Hershey bars - Replace these with your favorite chocolate candy for different flavor combinations. Reeses cups, Rolos, and Andes mints are popular choices, but you could even chop up some Snickers or Twix if you want!

  • Graham crackers - I wouldn’t recommend using crumbs, so break these up by hand or do a rough smash with a rolling pin. Nilla Wafers or Biscoff cookies would also taste delicious, or try crushed potato chips for a salty twist.

What You’ll Need For This Poke Cake

  • 9x13 Baking Dish - This set is one of my favorites! It comes with a lid for easy storage and is great for casseroles too.
  • Mixing Bowls - I like to have a variety of sizes on hand, and this set has them all.
  • A Sturdy Wooden Spoon - Preferably one with a rounded handle. It creates properly sized holes for grabbing that gooey filling!

FAQ - Common Recipe Questions

Do I have to use a box mix?

While it’s certainly easier, it’s not required. Feel free to swap it out with your favorite homemade recipe instead.

Can I make this marshmallow cake ahead of time?

While it’s best served immediately, you can prepare it the night before and keep it covered in the refrigerator if needed.

Smores cake tastes just fine cold, or you can warm individual slices in the microwave.

What is marshmallow topping?

It’s a spoonable sauce that tastes just like melted marshmallows. It comes in a jar and is typically located with the ice cream toppings.

If your store doesn’t carry it, you can find it online or make a substitute at home.

Combine marshmallow creme or fluff with 1 to 2 tablespoons of water and microwave for about a minute. This should create the perfect consistency for pouring over the poke cake.
