What Is Baja Blast Made Of?

This teal-colored spin on the classic soda features the addition of “tropical lime” flavor.

Created for a special partnership with Taco Bell, Baja Blast quickly became a customer favorite.

In fact, Mountain Dew Baja Blast was the second most popular soda sold at the fast food restaurant a decade after it was introduced!

The name was inspired by the Mexican state of Baja, which is known for its countless beaches.

Both companies felt that it was a perfect pairing for the Tex-Mex-inspired food that Taco Bell serves.

Taco Bell Baja Blast Ingredient Notes and Swaps

  • Mountain Dew – Nothing fancy here! Stick with the classic green bottle for this Baja Blast recipe.
  • Sprite – I find that this creates the best flavor, but any clear lemon-lime soda will do.

7-Up or Sierra Mist are great alternatives, while other recipes use regular lemonade instead.
  • Powerade – Through trial and error, it seems like Berry Blue Powerade gets the flavor closest to the popular drink.

Some say that Cool Blue Gatorade is a better match, so give that a try if your homemade Mountain Dew Baja Blast doesn’t taste quite right.

How To Make A Baja Blast

Simply combine equal parts of each ingredient in a tall glass with ice.

Give it a stir and get to sipping — it’s that easy!

Want to make a freeze?

Cool down in hotter weather with a slushie version of the Taco Bell Baja Blast — just like you can get at the drive-thru!

Simply add everything to a blender with a handful of ice and puree until you get the perfect consistency. Be sure that the bottled drinks are nice and cold first to get the best results.

Baja Blast Recipe FAQ

What goes with Mountain Dew Baja Blast?

Honestly, whatever you’re craving! It’s light and refreshing without overwhelming the flavors of your food, but it’s certainly best with anything Mexican-inspired.

Pour yourself an ice-cold glass to go with barbacoa, taco salad, or these easy chalupas.

Can I make a big batch of this drink?

Yes, all you need to do is scale up the Baja Blast recipe to fit your pitcher or punch bowl. Throw in some slices of citrus fruit or pineapple as a garnish to make it look more festive.

If you want to skip all of the measurements, combine a 2-liter bottle of each soft drink plus about 2 ½ of the large bottles of Powerade (the 28-ounce size).

Is there an alcoholic version of a Taco Bell Baja Blast?

You can certainly make your own! There’s no shortage of additions that would taste great with this drink.

Plain or citrus-flavored vodka and even coconut rum would be wonderful. Some gin or a splash of peach schnapps seem to be popular options as well.

Or, throw it in the blender with ice and a shot of tequila to make a tropical frozen margarita!

  1. Thanks for this! I'm born and raised American, but moved to Australia many years ago (my husband is Aussie). The last time we had Baja blast was when we got married over 15 years ago, and my husband still mentions it. haha I went out right away and got the ingredients when I saw this today, and we've all just had some. He said "That's really dang close!" so it's a winner. It's winter here now but I imagine that when summer comes I'll be making a big batch to take to the beach with us. 🙂
