INGREDIENT NOTES

  • Cinnamon Roll Tubes: Pillsbury Grands work best due to their size and richness. If using regular-size rolls, use 3 cans instead.
  • Apple Pie Filling: Use any brand you love. Chunkier fillings offer more texture.
  • Icing: Don’t skip it! But you can jazz it up with extra vanilla extract, lemon zest, or cream cheese if you want a homemade twist.

VARIATIONS

Fruit Swap: Use cherry, blueberry, or peach pie filling in place of apple.

Extra Texture: Stir in ½ cup dried cranberries or cherries.

Nutty Twist: Include chopped toasted pecans or walnuts between layers.

More Spice: Add a few dashes of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice.

Creamy Surprise: Mix 4 ounces of softened cream cheese with 2 tablespoons of sugar, then dollop between layers before cooking.

SLOW COOKER CINNAMON ROLLS FAQ

Can I prep the recipe ahead of time?

Yes, you can assemble crockpot cinnamon rolls with apple the night before, then cover the insert tightly with plastic wrap and pop it in the fridge. Just uncover and pop it in the slow cooker base when you’re ready to cook!

However, be sure to check the instructions for your crock pot first. If yours doesn’t allow cold-to-heat transitions, you’ll need to let the insert warm on the counter first so it doesn’t crack.

How do I reheat crockpot apple pie cinnamon roll casserole?

Microwave individual servings until soft, gooey, and warmed through. If you need to reheat the whole dish, transfer it to a greased baking pan and bake for 10-15 minutes at 350°F.

Can I use homemade apple pie filling?

If you’ve got the time, why not? This recipe for crockpot cinnamon rolls calls for two 20-ounce cans of pie filling, so you’ll need about 4 cups of the homemade stuff to make it work.

Best to make it ahead of time so it can cool first, which helps it thicken up. Homemade pie filling will also keep for a few days in the fridge, so you can grab it when you need it!

I’ve made more cinnamon roll recipes than I can count… from scratch, from a can, and everything in between.

This one is a top-tier favorite, especially for busy mornings, holiday brunches, or just when you want something warm and indulgent without turning on the oven.

I’ve tested this 2 ingredient apple cinnamon roll bake with different brands and fillings, and the key is layering and stirring just enough to get that gooey marriage of dough and filling, but not so much that you end up with mush.

Trust the slow cook. It’s worth it!!

DONNA’S PRO TIPS

  • Less Sticking: Use a silicone spatula to help scrape down the sides of the crockpot
  • Start Checking Early: If your crockpot runs hot, start checking at 1 hour 45 minutes to prevent overcooking.
  • Want extra caramelization? After cooking, remove the lid and cook for 15 minutes uncovered to let the top set.
  • Let It Sit Before Serving: Wait about 10 minutes after icing so the glaze can melt into every crevice.
  • Next-Level Indulgence: Serve with a scoop of butter pecan ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

TOOLS NEEDED

  • 6-quart Crockpot: More space = more even cooking.
  • Nonstick Spray: Keeps crockpot cinnamon rolls with apples from sticking to the side.
  • Cutting Board & Knife: To slice the rolls into quarters.
  • Spatula or Wooden Spoon: For stirring and smoothing the layers.
  • Serving Spoon: Helps to get down under everything when scooping out servings.

Prep Time 5 minutes
Cook Time 2 hours
Total Time 2 hours 5 minutes
Course Dessert
Cuisine American
Method Slow Cooker
Servings 8 -10

Ingredients

  • 2 cans (17.5 ounces each) Pillsbury Grands Cinnamon Rolls with icing (Cinnabon variety)
  • 2 cans (20 ounces) each apple pie filling, 20 ounces each apple pie filling

Instructions

  • Prepare the Crockpot: Liberally spray the inside of a 6-quart crockpot insert with nonstick cooking spray. This helps prevent sticking and makes cleanup easier.
  • Cut the Cinnamon Rolls: Open the cans of cinnamon rolls and set aside the icing packs. Cut each roll into quarters and set aside.
  • Layer the Ingredients: Place half of the cinnamon roll pieces evenly in the bottom of the crockpot. Spoon 1 can of apple pie filling over the top and spread it out gently.
  • Add Remaining Ingredients: Scatter the remaining cinnamon roll pieces over the apple pie filling. Spoon the second can of apple pie filling evenly over the top. Use a spatula or spoon to gently stir and lightly mix the layers. Spread into an even layer across the crockpot.
  • Cook: Cover with the lid and cook on LOW for 2 to 3 hours. Start checking around the 2-hour mark. The cinnamon rolls should be puffed up, golden brown around the edges, and cooked through. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean.
  • Add the Icing: Once cooked, drizzle the reserved icing packets evenly over the warm cinnamon rolls. For easier cleanup, serve directly from the crockpot with a spoon or spatula.
  • Serve: Serve warm as is or top with vanilla ice cream, butter pecan ice cream, or a drizzle of caramel sauce for an over-the-top treat.

Donna’s Notes

Make-Ahead Tips: You can prepare the entire dish in the crockpot insert the night before (do not cook). Cover and refrigerate. In the morning, place the insert in the crockpot base and cook on LOW as directed. Only do this if your crockpot base and insert allow cold-to-heat transitions.
Freezing Tips: Crockpot cinnamon rolls are best fresh, but leftovers can be frozen. Cool completely, portion into individual servings, wrap tightly in plastic wrap, and place in a freezer-safe container. Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat as desired.
Reheating Tips: Microwave individual servings in 20–30 second bursts until warm. For larger amounts, reheat in a 300°F oven for 10–15 minutes.
Storage: Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
Customization Ideas:
– Try cherry, blueberry, or peach pie filling in place of apple.
– Stir in 1/2 cup dried cranberries or chopped pecans for extra texture.
– Swap out the included icing for a homemade cream cheese glaze or drizzle with caramel sauce.
– Add a few dashes of cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice for extra warmth and flavor.
– Mix 4 ounces of softened cream cheese with 2 tablespoons sugar and dollop between layers before cooking for a creamy surprise!
