Perfectly Frozen Basil Lemonade

Temperatures have been heating up here in the valley of the sun.  After an afternoon working in the garden, all I want is a very refreshing drink.  I was just lucky enough to purchase a case of fabulous lemons from our co-op and they have been calling to me.  I have such a lemon 'thing'.  I am on a kick.  I have been making and enjoying lemon everything, I tell you.  If you have an amazing lemon creation for me to try, Facebook me the link.  I have been joking about having an "I love lemon month".  I love when the intense lemon flavor makes your mouth pucker.  ♥

With a garden full of 4 varieties of basil flourishing I thought "what a fantastic drink this is going to be" as I was hand selecting my 'sweet basil' leaves (this is my first recipe using my fresh garden ingredients, of course they had to be perfect).  So, I got started.  You know the secret to the perfect lemonade is not using sugar, but making a simple syrup.  What could be better than a summer day with Perfectly Frozen Basil Lemonade? Perfectly Frozen Basil Lemonade

You know the secret to the perfect lemonade is not using sugar, but making a simple syrup. What could be better than a summer day with Perfectly Frozen Basil Lemonade? Sharing it with the people you love. This recipe serves 4! Enjoy.

  • 5 cups ice cubes
  • 1-2 cups fresh lemon juice
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup fresh basil leaves, washed (plus extra for garnish)


  1. To create basil simple syrup: In a small sauce pan over medium-high heat combine sugar, water and basil leaves. Bring to a boil and cook until sugar is dissolved. Remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature (about 30 minutes). Strain basil leaves and place basil simple syrup in a mason jar.
  2. In a blender combine ice, lemon juice (start with 1 cup and adjust to taste) and basil simple syrup. Blend until fine consistency is reached. Serve in a glass garnished with basil leaves.

  1. YAY! You did it! Glad it turned out so well. That is a lot of fresh lemon juice! Holy smokes, you just might like a stronger lemon flavor than I do. That is no small feat, my friend!

    1. These are VERY LARGE lemons and you know how that goes. I would adjust to taste. If we used the lemons on my tree we would use a lot less juice.

  4. I am so lucky my neighbor has a crazy prolific lemon tree. She said please take them off her hands. It feeds the whole neighborhood. I have just discovered the simple syrup way to make lemonade. I don;t know why it took so long, but I now keep a jar in the frig for unexpected company. It just makes all the difference. Good post.

  7. I'm grilling tonight and was going to make Mint Juleps, but this sounds much more enticing!! (And yes, I'm adding vodka and turning it into a cocktail) Curious though, if I make a bunch, how long can the basil simple syrup sit in my fridge before it goes bad??
