I love making my own canine snacks at home. Not only is it easy to do, but I can choose my own ingredients so I know exactly what’s in each one.

Many recipes include vegetables or other bland foods, so watermelon creates a sweet alternative without any added sugar.

Your pup will also love these blueberry frozen dog treats for summer or peanut butter and carrot biscuits all year round.

 

How To Make Watermelon Dog Treats

First, chop up the fruit and remove any seeds. Measure out two cups worth and toss it into the food processor with some plain Greek yogurt.

Blend until creamy and smooth, then use the syringe to carefully fill each mold with the mixture.

Place the watermelon dog treats in the freezer and leave them for about 3 hours, or until frozen solid.

Tips and Tricks

• Good for humans too! Just two real-food ingredients make these safe to eat and healthy to boot.
• Avoid spills. Place the molds on a baking sheet to keep them level and steady when transferring in and out of the freezer.
• Want something sweeter? Toss in 2 tablespoons of dog-safe honey with the other fruit and yogurt.
• Store in the freezer. These will quickly melt without the colder temperature.

Best Way To Slice A Watermelon

Hold the fruit steady on a sturdy cutting board, then cut off both ends. Be sure to remove enough to see a large amount of the red flesh.

Stand the melon on one of the flat ends and slice down one of the sides, following the natural shape of the fruit. Continue all the way around until you have removed the entire rind.

Cut the watermelon down the middle, then slice into spears. Chop into chunks for this recipe and enjoy any leftovers for yourself!

How long do frozen dog treats last?

It can depend on the ingredients, but these watermelon dog treats are good for up to 2 months when stored in an airtight container.

I don’t have silicone molds. What else can I use?

You can make these in a regular ice cube tray if you prefer. For smaller dogs, I recommend filling each well about halfway so they are easier to chew.

Or, use small paper cups and fill them no more than an inch high. Peel off the paper once they are solid, then transfer to a large Ziploc bag or container with a lid.

How many frozen treats can I give my pup per day?

One, maybe two, is more than enough. Even though the ingredients are simple and healthy, these are meant to be a special snack.

The bulk of your canine’s daily nutrition should come from their kibble.

Ingredients

• ▢ 2 Cups watermelon, deseeded
• ▢ 1/2 Cup plain Greek Yogurt

Instructions

 

• Remove the rind from your watermelon and slice it into large chunks.
• Combine both ingredients in a food processor and blend until no chunks appear and it’s smooth.
• Place the silicone molds on a hard, flat, moveable surface such as a small cutting board.
• Using the injector or the pouring tool of your choice, fill the cavities of the molds until it hits just under the brim.
• Gently and carefully place the treats in the freezer for 3 hours or until frozen solid.

I know using an injector sounds like a funny thing to do, but since the molds are so small, it’s the best tool for the job.
