GIVEAWAY CLOSED. AND THE WINNER IS.... RUSTY (SARAH) HOLMGREN
We moved into our home about 10 years ago and bought it with all appliances included. They were 6 years old at the time and kind of mismatched but they all worked. So we decided we had better figure out how to take care of them to make them last.
After some research and trial and error Chad came up with a great routine for maintaining the washer and dryer. But then life got hectic, and as it goes we stopped the routine until one day early this fall. Let me step back a few months. We had a jet setting crazy summer. We would be home long enough to do our laundry and pack for our next trip.
By the end of summer when things settled down we were noticing our towels and clothes smelled odd. Kind of funky, you know what I mean? I couldn’t put my finger on it so Chad started using more detergent, washing in a hot cycle and hoping that would help. It didn’t.
Then we remembered it had been a while (who knows how long) since we did our maintenance routine. So Chad gave it a shot and I have to tell you, after battling with funky smelling laundry the relief you feel to grab a towel and bury your nose in it to enjoy the freshness is such a gift.
So, I am sure you are asking what how did he do it? Yes he! Chad does the laundry. I know. Lucky girl {{{gush}}}. It’s easy and keep reading for tips on maintaining your dryer. Maybe yours will last 16 years too.
• scrub brush
• cleaning cloth
• cotton swabs
• 4 cups (1 quart) regular bleach
• 4½ cups (1 quart + ½ cup) white vinegar
I am sure it goes without saying, but you want to remove all clothes from the washer before cleaning it.
Start by cleaning your washer’s exterior. Mix 1 cup of hot water and ½ cup vinegar. Using a clean cloth dampen in vinegar solution and wipe down all surfaces with cloth. Put some weight into it. Use a little elbow grease to really clean the knobs well.
Open the top and wipe down the inside of the lid. Sometimes dirt and soap splash the lid leaving a build up of grime. Use cotton swabs to get in the crevices. Remove any bleach or fabric softener dispensers (when possible) and scrub the dispenser with your scrub brush dipped in the vinegar solution. Use your scrub brush to clean the agitator and take a peek at the top of the wash bin. Use a cloth to clean this area.
Set your washer to the hottest setting, the largest load and the longest wash and spin cycle. Let the washer fill with hot water and add 4 cups bleach. Allow the washer to agitate for 2 minutes and then turn the washer off and let it sit for 1 hour. Head out to the kitchen and try 2 of our 30 minute meals, I mean you have an hour to kill. After an hour turn the washer back on and let it finish the cycle.
After the first cycle has finished turn the washer back on and fill with hot water once again. Add 4 cups vinegar. Allow the washer to agitate for 2 minutes and then turn the washer off and let it sit for 1 hour. Go watch a couple DVR’d episodes of your favorite show. Duck Dynasty and Walking Dead are my personal fav’s. No point in hanging around the laundry room. After an hour turn the washer back on and let it finish the cycle.
You now have a clean as new washing machine, ready to be put to the test! We cleaned out our laundry room while we were cleaning our machines. Do you know how many things we had in there that we haven’t used in 5 years??? A whole box full! Not to mention the farm of dust bunnies behind those unused product. ACK!
Additional tips for maintaining your washer and extending the life of your machine:
• The cleaning routine should be repeated monthly for best results. Repeat routine at least every 3 months to prevent build up.
• If you live in a hard water area you will want to perform this routine monthly. Hard water and lime can build up in your machine and your lines causing things to run inefficiently.
• It is recommended that you replace your washer hose every 3-5 years. This is something you want to put on your calendar (or on a note in your laundry room) I have had to clean up the mess from a busted washer hose before, it’s not fun.
• Do not overload your machine it causes the machine to run inefficiently and puts strain on the motor.
• Shake your clothes out before placing in the washer.
• Make sure your machine is level; the vibration can cause “walking” of the machine which can damage the floor and objects around it. Additionally it can cause additional strain on the machine.
• Leave the lid open. It will allow the drum to dry completely and prevent mold and mildew odors from developing.
• Be sure to turn off the water when you leave on vacation. Hoses are constantly under pressure and a busted water hose can cause severe water damage to your home while you are away.
Tips for maintaining your dryer and extending the life of your machine:
• Always shake your clothes out before placing them in the dryer.
• Do not overfill, it causes additional strain on the machine
• Empty the lint trap after every load.
• Monthly (when you clean the washer), remove the lint trap and scrub with a soft brush and gentle dish detergent to remove any residue. An unclean lint trap can block air flow. Dry completely before returning to dryer.
• Every six months pull the dryer out and unplug it. Vacuum out the lint trap and the wall and the floor behind the dryer. Disconnect the vent and piping and check the airflow to the outside for obstructions. Proper airflow helps with the longevity and efficiency of your dryer.
Easy peasy! So, then we had a beautiful, clean and perfectly functional 16 year old washer and dryer set. But, sometimes you just want something new. So, needless to say the new owners of our washer and dryer were very happy with them.
We are so excited to be able to tell you about our new LG 3.6 cu ft High-Efficiency Front-Load Washer and LG 7.3 cu ft Electric Dryer! They arrived about 3 months ago and we are so thrilled with them. OK, OK. Chad is so thrilled with them, but I like I said they are so pretty and play a cute tune when the cycle is done.
I honestly did not realize exactly how little water they use. Wow! My daughter is amazed too, she sits in front of the washer and watches it spin. Too cute. Bonus for mom and dad; the front load is perfect for teaching her to help with the laundry too. Triple score!
Seriously though, once we cleaned out the laundry room and got the new set we knew we had to redo the room. So, we headed over to Lowe’s and picked up some paint and flooring. We painted and re-floored the room and then put in the new washer and dryer. It’s so nice I might even start doing laundry. Nah! Who am I kidding? That’ll never happen.
The great news; Lowe’s is giving away a $350 Lowe’s Giftcard to one lucky reader! That is certain to make your next home improvement project a whole lot easier. ReplyDeleteMy next home improvement project is new front and back storm doors.
ReplyDeleteMy planned home improvement project was the laundry room that was never completed and i began to clean it out when my Electric Range suddenly gave up and my Refrigerator repairman informed me that he made a rigged-fix to give me some time to replace the fridge. I'm overwhelmed trying to replace them both. What ever happened to just having to choose between electric and gas for a range and side by side or top freezer refrigerators?? So many choices! Its Thanksgiving week, I can't cook and I'm afraid to fill the fridge. Ugh! This too shall pass and I'm thankful the dishwasher still works....lol......maybe I shouldn't have said that! God Bless you and thank you for the opportunity to enter this giveaway!
ReplyDeleteHave to try this

ReplyDeleteMy first home improvement would be to actually -get- a home outside of my parents', haha.

ReplyDeleteJessica Murray
I have several windows left to replace. That is next on my list.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your blog!!! Had a Samsung front loading washer and dryer for 3 1/2 years; they both went out within a month of each other (washer first), about 4 months shy of the 4 year extended warranty deadline. YAY! Both were covered 100% and I used the money to buy a set of Speed Queens--MADE IN AMERICA and stainless steel. I see your front loader in the blog pic has the emergency drain (lower left); you will be thankful for that if yours ever dies...while full of water & clothes.
ReplyDeleteThey're wondering what my next home improvement project is? We'll be putting in additional cabinets and counters in our extended pantry/laundry room to give us more storage for cooking! :D
ReplyDeleteMy next project is going to be remodeling the laundry room and replacing our old barely working appliances. It looks like I will have to replace my dishwasher first as it is no longer working at all. This would come at a very good time. Thanks for the giveaway. Good luck everyone.
ReplyDeleteI need a new washer.
ReplyDeleteLove it!
ReplyDeletereplacing my kitchen counter tops!
ReplyDeleteGreat advice....now I have something to do this weekend.
ReplyDeleteOur next big project will be to replace the tile countertops in my kitchen. We're still deciding what material to use, but it won't be started until after the holidays.
ReplyDeleteWe are in the middle of a bathroom project, replacing the sink for more accessibility now that my husband is in a wheel chair. We live in an old farm house so we have a lot of projects
ReplyDeletewill definitely be trying this with my washer
ReplyDeleteThanks for the tips.. Definately going to try this.
ReplyDeleteWhat a timely post! My washer has gotten so grungy, and I 've been trying to figure out how to get it clean and maintain it that way. The last time I cleaned it up, a few months ago, I ended up with torn a bleeding knuckles, and figured there had ro be an easier way (yes, it did occur to me I should have worn cleaning gloves). One thing that I have learned is to be very exact in measuring my laundry detergent. An overabundance of detergent can cause that funky smell, don't know why.
ReplyDeleteLove your recipes! Any tips for cleaning a front loader washer?
ReplyDeleteLove your post! I think I could appreciate my own "Chad". Lol :) Our next wishlist item actually happens to be a new dryer. we got ours secondhand and it has been limping along for the last six months. I dream of a set like yours. Have a wonderful day. and thank you for the chance to win a great prize. it's time for me to go do some maintenance on our washing machine. :) ~mia
ReplyDeleteMy bathroom is next on the list. Then the living room. Then the front porch and so on.......
ReplyDelete$350 would be great! Earlier this summer we got our foundation fixed ($10,000). Last month we just finished getting brand new windows (double paned argon gas filled) instead of the paper thin windows that were built with the house back in the 70's. We also got brand new siding and a roof with thermo sheet (windows, siding, and roof $18,000). Last week we also got our brick fixed (yes we have siding and brick all around the house) from the foundation and drought issues we had for the last 2 years. Half the walls were busted and had fallen in and had to get anchors put through out the whole house ($3400). And now we are having to replace our chain link fence in the front from our 2 very huge and aggressive dogs that love jumping on it when they see cats or squirrels. That $350 would work out perfect for it. We have been living here for almost 5 years and have finally saved up to fix all of that, along with having 2 kids in the process. We need to have a new fence and once we try to save up again then we will work on the inside. Our house was a renters house long before we bought it and it was not properly taken care of or fixed by the previous owner. Didnt start noticing it until the first weather change (fall to winter).
ReplyDeleteThanks for the washing machine tips, we are currently renting and totally disgusted with the way our clothes smell after we wash them!
ReplyDeleteI'm working on my basement right now. Then on to the kitchen. It's the last room that needs to be done.
ReplyDeleteMy house was built in 1863 so there is always a project to do. Next project is new kitchen floor and backsplash
ReplyDeletekitchen floor and backsplash
ReplyDeleteI'm looking to buy a house at beginning of 2014 then I'll see which updates need to be done first.
ReplyDeleteI actually don't have anything next on the list. I have a hundred things that need to be done but with two kids in school, (College and Law school) no funds.
ReplyDeletePainting and papering all bathrooms, not my favorite thing to do.
ReplyDeleteRight now it's finishing the new garage and then it's installing a drain pipe in our basement. It never ends, but now I have to also add cleaning the washer and dryer after reading the abovementioned!
ReplyDeleteI want to paint my apt.give it a fresh new look
ReplyDeleteGarage door opener, drainpipe in basement and now of course cleaning washer and dryer, thanks alot.
ReplyDeleteSound easy enough ...
ReplyDeleteMy husband just said new flooring! Yay!
ReplyDeleteWe just bought a used home and the guest bath is horrible. The floor is rotted so it has to be replaced and the carpet taken out and tile put in. Also the stool is about to fall thru the floor and is old, so it is going to be replaced with a handicapped one for me.
ReplyDeleteI would go through and replace a few broken / damaged items we have just dealt with over the years. The top of my list would be the bathroom mirrored cabinet missing 1 door, bathroom vanity counter.
ReplyDeleteI need a washer and dryer badly, have to carry the clothes out to my brothers right now.
ReplyDeleteThank you for the post! What a great reminder to take care of our machines that we use almost daily! Thank you for the opportunity for a giftcard!
ReplyDeletedanatoo@yahoo.com
