KC Style Barbecue Sauce (Kansas City Style)

There is this barbecue restaurant around the corner, that is within smelling distance.  I kid you not they send out subliminal smoke signals several times EVERY day.  In the summer this isn't too bad, as you are rarely outside to smell it.  But as the fall approaches and we are more frequently outdoors, this gets to be an issue.  It usually works like this... 

Its around 11-11:30am and you are in the backyard working or playing.  All of a sudden out of nowhere you are stricken with hunger pangs, and the intense desire to have BBQ. The wafting aroma of Kansas City Style BBQ picks you up and carries you by the nose straight into the restaurant and plants you into one of their cozy booths.

Once you are seated you can order like Chad does "I will have whatever it is that you are cooking, that I can smell from my house".  No matter what they bring, the Kansas City BBQ Sauce is enough to keep you craving more.  KC BBQ Sauce boasts multiple layers of heat and sweet!  So, I had to develop my own recipe for a Kansas City BBQ Sauce.  And am I glad that I did!  Chad is ecstatic!  He said "This.is.what.they.serve.at.Dillon's!" Just about bouncing with a spoonful of barbecue sauce in his mouth as he spoke.

Right then at that moment...  I knew I nailed it!  We really love this barbecue sauce and you will be seeing it in action tomorrow so make sure you check back.  Enjoy.

KC Style Barbecue Sauce (Kansas City Style)
makes 6 cups
20 ounces ketchup
2 (8 ounce) cans tomato sauce
1 1/4 cups dark brown sugar
1 cup apple cider vinegar
½ cup molasses (unsulfured)
2 chipotle peppers, diced (from chipotle pepper in adobo sauce)
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
2 teaspoons smoked paprika
1 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 teaspoon onion powder
½ teaspoon chili powder
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1 teaspoon fresh ground black pepper

In a large sauce pan over medium heat combine all ingredients.  Whisk to combine well.  Bring to a boil.  Reduce to simmer for 1 hour. 

Serve and enjoy!

  1. As an rabid BBQ aficionado, you know I will be trying this soon! Just finished off a brisket and three racks of ribs this weekend so it will be next weekend, but I will definitely try it. Thanks for sharing.

  2. How long will the sauce last in the fridge?

    1. The sauce should keep for at least a week, although I have kept it for much longer. Enjoy and let us know how it goes.

  3. Can you omit or substitute another oil for the butter? I thought this recipe would be safe for a dairy allergy because I didn't realize butter was needed to make BBQ!

    1. to the bottom of the jar, in our case bout a week :)
